The Stellar phase density of the local Universe and its implications for galaxy evolution

This is from arXiv: 1008.4252 . I will explain what the figure means.

Extremely metal-poor stars in classical dwarf spheroidal galaxies

Extremely metal-poor stars in classical dwarf spheroidal galaxies: Fornax, Sculptor and Sextans
Tafelmeyer et al. 2010, arXiv:1008.3721

The authors present high resolution spectra of five stars inside the three dwarf galaxies and infer their metallicities. All stars have metallicities [Fe/H] <- 3.0. Their study strongly suggests that extremely metal-poor stars are common also in dwarf galaxies. The figure demonstrates the validity of the new CaT-[Fe/H ]calibration by Starkenburg et al. 2010. Applications of older calibration laws that were not tested at low [Fe/H] inhibited previous detections of EMP stars in dwarfs.
